Nails Of The Day (NOTD): DIY glitter nail polish

Hello everyone!

As some of you might have notice (from my previous NOTD posts) I love glitter nail polish.  So today I decided I wanted to try and make my own customised glitter nail polish!

Glitter nail polish is easy to make yourself and you can customise it to your liking.

This is what my DIY glitter nail polish looks like:

If you would like to make your own glitter nail polish, keep reading!

Here's what you’ll need:
  • Glitter of your choice (I used a multicoloured glitter)
  • Clear nail polish
  • Paper funnel

Method:

Make a paper funnel.  Tip: If your clear polish is full, you should pour some out to make room for the glitter! Or wait until you've used up some of it.

Place the funnel over the nail polish bottle and pour in a little bit of glitter at a time.  Close the bottle and shake well.

And voilĂ !  There you have it: DIY glitter nail polish!

 one coat

 two coats

This was my first tryAs you can see, the glitter colour dissolved in the clear nail polish giving it a purple tint

I actually like the way it turn out!  What do you think?

The holy grail of toners!

Hello everyone!

Today I want to talk to you about facial toners and tell you about my favorite toner.  So, what is a facial toner?  A toner is an astringent liquid applied to the skin to help eliminate excess oil and bacteria that your everyday cleanser may not have removed completely.

Main benefits of facial toners:

  • Remove dirt, make-up residue and impurities
  • Remove excess oil
  • Refine pores and tighten pores (temporarily)
  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines
  • Restore natural pH balance
  • Improve skin tone

Most dermatologists say that if you cleanse your face regularly twice a day you don’t need to use a toner.  The dermatologist who monitored my acne when I was a teen, never suggested/prescribed any toner either.  Still, I feel that my skin needs that extra cleansing step.

I tried out quite a lot of facial toners, throughout the years.   I’ve been using the same product for a few years now and I just love it!  I feel like I finally found the holy grail of facial toners.

My facial toner of choice is… Distilled Witch Hazel!

Witch hazel (extract) is a natural product obtained from the leaves and bark of the witch hazel shrub (Hamamelis Virginiana).  It has been used medicinally for over 200 years.  Its benefits derive from the high levels of tannin acid it contains.

When distilled and combined with alcohol, the essential oil extracted from the witch hazel shrub makes a soothing astringent.  Witch hazel has disinfectant and anti-oxidant properties.  It reduces irritation and helps to prevent any inflammation from occurring.  It also reduces swelling.

Tips:

  • The witch hazel you want to use should have an alcohol base of only 14%.  You can also try an alcohol-free witch hazel toner.
  • Witch hazel can also be added to DIY facial masks and toners.
  • You can also add a few drops of tea tree oil directly in the witch hazel bottle.  (This makes an amazing acne-fighting toner!)

Distilled witch hazel has long been recommended as an effective and affordable topical remedy for acne.  Nevertheless, it can be used for all skin types.  I highly recommend using witch hazel as a facial toner.  It really works for me and I also convinced my mum to replace her toner with witch hazel and she loves it too.

What is your favorite facial toner?  Have you ever used witch hazel?   Leave a comment and tell me about your experience.

So many nail shaping options!

Hello everyone!  Did you know that there are quite a few ways in which you can shape your nails?

Choosing a nail shape:

When deciding on the shape you want your nails you should consider as few things: the shape of your hands, the length of your fingers, shape of your cuticle area, your hobbies and your work.  Here are some examples of different nail shapes.

Straight sided with a slightly oval tip
For this shape allow the sides to grow straight and slightly round the tip.

Oval-shaped

The oval nail shape is an attractive and conservative shape for women's hands.  Oval-shaped nails make your nail beds appear longer; this makes them an ideal shape for short nails.

Square oval-shaped
Similar to the oval-shaped, but followed by squaring off the tip.

Almond-shaped
This is considered the classic nail shape.  This style is very feminine and makes the fingers appear thinner.

Rounded-shaped
These are nails that are perfectly rounded towards the top.  They are perfect for those who use their hands a lot, have weak nails or just want to keep the nails short.  Round nails are the most common shape for men as well.

Square-shaped
Square-shaped nails are completely straight across with no rounding at the edges.  They are perfect for medium and long nails.

Squarely rounded /Squoval –shaped

The squoval nail shape is not quite oval, not quite square.  Shape your nails in the form of a square, and only curve the corners to give it a rounded look.  This is also very flattering on long nails.

Stiletto-shaped
These are nails that are shaped pointed at the top.  The pointed nail shape looks good on thin hands with narrow nail beds.  However, nails shaped in this way are definitely not practical for day-to-day activities.  If you want this look I suggest you get nail extensions.

Tips:
Stay away from metal nail files; use a soft, straight file instead.  Do not file from side to side.  Make sure to file from corner to centre in one direction.

Remember, your nails are the most beautiful part of your hands and you can style them any way you like.
So, tell me which shape do you prefer?  My favourite is the squoval!

My mini makeover!

Hello everyone! How is your weekend going?

I was bored with my locks (again) so I decided it was time for a hairstyle chance.  I just found a hair colour I love (after changing my hair colour every 4/6 weeks for the past year or so) and I want to keep the length for the Spring/Summer season.  I still trim my hair every 4/6 weeks though.  So, I opted for side swept bangs!

Cutting some bangs is one of the easiest ways to transform your hairstyle!  Side swept bangs are very versatile and look great on all face shapes and with various hair textures. Bangs are a perfect way to add interest to longer hair.  Side swept bangs are also a great way to test out having bangs if you cut them long.  This way, they can be blended into your hair easily if you end up not liking them.

My new bangs/fringe:

How do you feel about bangs?  Let me know!

Nails Of The Day (NOTD): Blue glitter on greenish base

Hello everyone! This is just a quick post to show you my NOTD.

So, this is what I’m wearing on my finger nails today.

First, I applied a layer of base coat and one coat of Egyptian Gold nail polish.

Then, I applied one coat of Blue glitter and a clear top coat.

I just purchased this Blue glitter nail polish and couldn’t wait to try it.  I like the way it looks on this greenish base colour.  What do you think?

Hope you enjoyed this quick post!

DIY: Milk and honey hair mask

As I told you in my previous blog post, I'm currently testing out some DIY natural hair masks.  Today I am going to share a recipe for a nourishing hair mask, ideal for restoring damaged hair.  This hair mask is 100% natural!

Ingredients:

  • 4 tablespoons of pure honey
  • a small cup of fresh milk
  • a small cup of yoghurt/Greek yoghurt

The benefits of milk for your hair:

The proteins and lipids in milk strengthen hair, whereas the calcium promotes hair growth and helps prevent hair loss.  Furthermore, milk contains other nutrients like vitamins A, B6, biotin and potassium, which work to keep hair soft and shiny.

The benefits of honey for your hair:

Honey is an all natural substance that benefits your skin and hair.  It adds moisture to the hair and makes the hair more manageable.

Method:

  • Mix fresh milk and yoghurt in a bowl.
  • Pour the pure honey into the mixture and blend well.
  • Let the mixture sit in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes; this allows the ingredients to amalgamate.

How to use:

  • Apply the mixture from roots to tips onto clean, towel-dried hair.
  • Massage the scalp; this allows your hair to fully absorb all the nutrients.
  • Wrap your hair in a warm towel.
  • Let the hair mask sit in your hair for about 30 minutes.
  • Rinse the mixture out with warm water.
  • Shampoo and condition as usual.

Remember, the best way to maintain healthy hair is to use natural products as much as possible.  Have you tried any DIY hair masks?

Organise your fashionista life with clipix

One of my new year’s resolutions is to be more organised.  So far I think I’m doing a good job.  So, recently I came across I site called clipix.   Clipix solves the problem we all sometimes have of seeing loads of things online each day and never having a good way to save and organise them.  It’s a very useful tool and it helps me organise my life online too!
Clipix is the perfect tool for those who like to have a place where they can save and organise all their favourite items.  Create a free account and you can start creating clipboards where you can save everything that you see online.  You can also organise them in any way you want.  You can customise the settings of your clipboards and choose whether you want to share them with your friends or not.  You can also set the privacy settings of each board individually.
Setting up my account was as easy as signing in using Twitter or Facebook.  However, if you don’t want to use either of those, you can just sign up using an e-mail.
At the moment I have various clipboards on my clipix account:  I have a clipboard where I clip interesting articles I come across.  I have one labeled “Gift ideas”; where I clip things I like and think would make a great gift for my family or friends.

Another one labeled “Fashion”; where I clip cute outfits and accessories for future reference.

I also have a clipboard labeled “Hair straighteners”; where I clip straighteners I like.  That way I can easily compare features and prizes.

Besides, you are not limited to just using clipix on your computer.  Clipix also offers and iPhone app.
Here is a video with a little more information on clipix:

I love that I can use clipix for organizing anything and everything online.

What are you going to use clipix for?  Tell me in the comments below.

SOS - Chapped lips!

Oh baby it’s cold outside!

Cold weather can be very harsh on the skin, especially our lips.  Chapped lips are unattractive and sometimes can be painful.

Here are some tips on how to prevent and/or treat chapped lips:

1.  Drink plenty of water.  Your lips dry out because you are dehydrated.  Drink decaffeinated herbal teas if you feel that water is too cold to drink.

2.  Remove dead skin.

These are methods I use to exfoliate my lips:
  • Toothbrush method: Use a soft bristled toothbrush to exfoliate - be gentle!  You can apply lip balm before rubbing with the toothbrush.  Do not do this every day.
  • Wash-cloth method: Get a wash-cloth and run it under some warm water.  Make sure it is not too hot, and then squeeze it out to remove excess water.  Rub the wash-cloth over your lips.  Don't rub them too hard.

3.  Sleep with the lip balm on your lips overnight.  I keep my favourite lip balm on my bedside table and apply it every night.

4.  Never lick your lips.  Saliva is acidic (to help dissolve food) and therefore dehydrates your lips even more.

5.  Make sure you always carry a lip balm with you.  Remember to re-apply throughout the day.

Nails Of The Day (NOTD): Valentine’s Day nail art

Hello everyone!  Valentine’s Day is almost here, and although I don’t celebrate it, I thought it would be fun to decorate my nails for the occasion!

This is what my V-Day inspired nails look like!

Here's a step by step tutorial:

  •  Apply a base coat (to keep your polish from staining your nails) and let it dry completely

  • Now take small pieces of tape, and stick them where you do not want any red nail polish.

  • Next take your red nail polish and paint the tip of each finger nail.  Let this layer dry really well before removing the tape.

  • Once the red polish is completely dry, remove the tape very slowly.

  • Now paint a small heart on each finger nail.  This is very easy; just draw a “V” shape!

  • Lastly apply a clear top coat and you’re done.

Let me know if you like my V-Day inspired nails!  I would also like to know; what type of posts would you like to see on Skin Care Suggestions?
