Natural bridal facial mask

Hello everyone!

Turmeric is renowned for its medicinal properties; it has antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.  For this reason, turmeric can also be used to fight acne, psoriasis and blackheads.

For centuries in India, a turmeric facial mask was applied to a bride's face before her wedding to make her look radiant and glowing.  Turmeric is also known to slow down the ageing process and fight dry skin.  It can also help reduce pigmentation and even out skin tone.

Method:
  • Wash your face with a facial cleanser and pat your face dry.
  • Mix 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder with 1 teaspoon of honey (or you could also use coconut oil or plain yoghurt).
  • Apply a thin layer to the face and leave on for about 20 minutes.
  • Rinse with warm water.
  • Apply toner and moisturiser.
This mask will give you a softer, smoother and even skin tone!

Tips:

Keep in mind that turmeric can stain the skin a light yellow.  Do not use too much and always mix with honey/coconut oil/plain yoghurt.  Do not make a paste with turmeric and water alone because it will temporally stain your skin!

Turmeric is not only great for applying on the skin but it has a multitude of health benefits if you ingest it as well.

Tell me, have you ever used turmeric as a skin care ingredient?

I need a new hair straightener

The ceramic coating on my hair straightener is wearing off, exposing the metal underneath.  Damaged plates can cause extensive hair damage so I need to get a new hair straightener.

A frequent problem with ceramic hair straighteners is that most of them are not hot enough to straighten hard to manage hair.  I find that for my hair type, straighteners that reach higher temperatures (>180 °C) produce the best results.  I am looking for a straightener with wide plate (1 ½” or 2”).   Wider plates are best for people with a lot of hair or coarse hair.
Ceramic hair straighteners are believed to be “gentle” to the hair.  Still, frequent use of hair straighteners, like any other heat styling tools, can cause hair damage such as split ends, thinning of the hair and even causing hair to become prone to breakage.  Always use a heat protectant to lessen the amount of damage.
Most straighteners have ceramic coated metal plates that often wear, chip, or peel.  100% solid ceramic hair straighteners never chip, peel or scratch.  Even so, they tend to be more delicate and break more easily if dropped.  Decisions, decisions…

What hair straightener do you use?  Do you have any recommendations?  Leave a comment and let me know!

Nails Of The Day (NOTD): “Endless Summer”

Hello everyone!  Are any of you football (soccer) fans?

If you are, you certainly know that the UEFA EURO 2012 is taking place.  I'm not a fan, although I am rooting for Spain (as always) and France too – Allez les Blues!

Anyway, yesterday’s winners; France and England inspired this NOTD post.

inspired by the flag of France
This is more subtle and definitely more wearable than having a flag on each finger nail!  ;)

inspired by the flag of England
You can draw this on your ring finger and/or your thumb.  Or you can even draw ten little flags if you like!

"Endless Summer" by Oceana is the official song for the UEFA EURO 2012.  Enjoy...

Do you like the song?

What's your favourite sports team?  Leave a comment and let me know!

Lighten your hair with cinnamon

Are you looking for a safe way to lighten your hair?  Yes, there are safe, an all natural ways to lighten your hair!  Girls with blonde hair can use naturally ingredients such as; lemon juice and chamomile to lighten their hair. Unfortunately those methods do not work on darker hair.  Still, there is another natural method to lighten dark hair.  Cinnamon can lighten dark hair at least two shades and it also strengthens it!

You will need:

hair conditioner
ground cinnamon
plastic processing cap/plastic bag
honey (has additional bleaching and moisturising properties)

Method:

Step 1: Prepare the mixture
Add the conditioner, cinnamon, and honey (if desired) together in a plastic container. The amounts needed are determined by the length and thickness of your hair.  Mix with a plastic spoon as metal can react with the mixture.

Step 2: Shampoo/Co-wash and condition hair

Step 3: Apply the mixture
Apply the mixture evenly to damp hair.  I recommend applying the mixture using disposable gloves.  Place the plastic processing cap/plastic bag over your hair.

NOTE: Cinnamon is a known skin irritant so it may tingle for a few minutes but it will go away.  If the tingling persists or becomes unbearable, rinse it out immediately.

Step 4: Wait
The mixture should stay in your hair for at least 4 hours.  The longer the processing time, the more results you will see.  Therefore leaving it on overnight is the best option.

Step 5: Rinsing the mixture out and reveal your new shade
Make sure you rinse the mixture out completely.  This method will give you a lighter, reddish colour.  The more applications you do, the more change you will see.

The mixture will leave your hair moisturised, soft, and smelling delicious!

Have you ever tried lightening your hair with natural ingredients?  Leave a comment and let me know!

Those dreaded jellyfish stings!

Hello everyone!

A jellyfish sting is extremely painful and for some, can be life threatening.  Similar to bee stings, allergic reactions to jellyfish are possible and illness can result from extensive stings.  Seek immediate medical attention if breathing becomes difficult.

Otherwise, there are a few natural remedies that can help to remove nematocysts (stinging cells) and relieve the pain.

On the spot care:

The healing process starts by neutralising the venom as soon as possible.  This is done by pouring undiluted vinegar over the affected part, and waiting for about 5 to 10 minutes.  Then you should carefully remove the nematocysts which are still embedded in the skin, using tweezers, clothing, towels, seaweed or anything else available.  The venom gets neutralised by the acetic acid present in the vinegar.  This process will only neutralise the venom which has not been injected yet from the stinging cells.

You can also scrape the tentacles off the skin with the help of a card.  NOTE: Do not scrape them off before neutralising the venom, this could cause further stings.
  • Do not touch tentacles with bare hands.
  • Do not wash with freshwater or put sunscreen lotion on the area.
  • Do not rub the wound or apply ice to it.

After care:

You can apply Aloe vera gel and tea tree oil to soothe the burning sensation and relieve the pain.

Clearly, the best thing would be to avoid jellyfish tentacles whenever possible.

Have you ever been stung by a jellyfish?  How did you treat the affected area?  Leave a comment and let me know!

Eye shadow colours that complement your eyes

Hello everyone!

Do you know which eye shadow colours make your eyes pop?   It's super easy.  You want to choose colours that will complement your natural eye colour.

Let’s take a look at the colour wheel...

Complementary colours are directly opposite each other on the colour wheel.

Tips for BLUE eyes:

You want to stick with colours in the orange family. This doesn't necessarily mean you need to use orange.  Just stick with earth tones.  Gold, copper, and bronze are a great choice for you.

Tips for GREEN & HAZEL eyes:
You want to rock colours close to red.  Yes, I know, red and green is totally "Christmassy".  Pink, lilac, and other shades of red can work for you.  Another colour that really makes green eyes pop is purple.  Different shades of purple look good on different skin tones.  If you still want your green eyes to pop but look more natural, earth tones are a good way to go.

Tips for BROWN eyes:

If you have brown eyes (like me), you have a wide range of eye shadow colours to choose from.  You can wear almost every colour on the colour wheel.  Of course, not all of them will look good next to your skin tone.  Colours that will make your eyes pop include green, pink, and blue.

What eye shadow colours do you love to wear?

Doughnut (donut) for your hair?!

Have you ever wondered how to get this sophisticated hair bun?

I have always thought that this hairdo is really hard to do and could only be done by a professional hairstylist.  But there’s a very easy way to get this look.

The key to this hairstyle is a doughnut bun shaper.  It is not that expensive but if you want to, you can just make one yourself.

DIY doughnut bun shaper:

Things you’ll need...
long, thick wool sock
nylon sock (preferably one that is close to your hair colour)
scissors

  • Find a long wool sock and a nylon sock.  Cut the toe area from both socks.
  • Put the wool sock on your arm, cut side first.  Slowly roll it down from the toe to the elastic end.  This will create a doughnut shape.
  • Cover the wool sock with a tight nylon sock that matches your hair colour.  This will help the bun shaper blend in with your hair

And finally, you should get something like this.  Now the bun shaper is ready to use!

DIY doughnut hair bun:

Things you’ll need...
brush/comb
doughnut bun shaper
2 hair ties
bobby pins

  • Comb your hair and tie it in a ponytail.
  • Thread the ponytail through the hole of the doughnut.

  • Lean forward and spread your hair evenly over the sock.  Make sure that your hair completely hides the sock.
  • Stretch a hair tie over your bun.

  • Use bobby pins to secure the ends of your hair to the base of your bun.

  • Tuck your ends in or if they are long enough twist or braid them around the base.

You can be as creative as you like and add hair accessories, such as; flowers, bows or anything you like.

Hope you found this helpful!
