How to remove Halloween make-up

Hello everyone!
Dressing-up as someone, or something, for Halloween can be a lot of fun.  An elaborate costume can require a lot of make-up.  But once the fun is over, how do you take it off?

Every product has different ingredients, so the way you remove it will differ.  Water-based products are much easier to get off than oil-based ones.  But first, always read the label.

Here are some general guidelines on how to remove costume make-up and face paints.

Use soap and water
Before you try using any make-up removers, wash your face with soap and see if that does the job.

Use a make-up remover
Use your regular make-up remover, it will work on most types of Halloween make-up.

Use an oil (coconut, jojoba, etc)
Oil adheres to oil, so it's one of the easiest ways to take off face paint.

Use baby wipes
If you don't have any make-up removing wipes, baby wipes will work just as well.

Use a lotion
A little lotion on a cotton ball is great for removing make-up without drying out your skin.

Calavera (aka sugar skull) make-up

Hello everyone - it's almost Halloween!
In a number of different cultures, there is a dedicated celebration made especially to remember the lives of family and friends who have passed away.  Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a Mexican holiday, celebrated on the 1st and 2nd November simultaneously with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day.  The festivities start at midnight on the 31st October.

Sugar skulls are often used to decorate the gravestones of the deceased.

If you want the perfect mixture of spooky and sweet, this year you could try the calavera (aka sugar skull) make-up!  Check out the infographics below for an easy step-by-step tutorial.

  • Hope you have a spooky time on Halloween.  But don’t get too scared though.

DIY: Anti-ageing vegan mask

Hello everyone!

A vegan diet contributes towards a youthful appearance and lifestyle and healthy skin are definitely linked.  However, that doesn't mean that vegans don't need to use anti-ageing products.  Today I want to share the recipe for my favourite anti-ageing vegan mask with you.

If you are looking for a really effective mask that delivers immediate results, look no further!

Ingredients:
  • 1 tsp organic quinoa flour
  • 1 bag of white tea
  • 1 tbsp mashed banana
Quinoa contains vitamin A, which smooths out the skin and fade dark spots.  It also contains lysine, a key building block in the synthesis of elastin and collagen.
White tea is packed with antioxidants that will help your skin fight the aging factors.
The mashed banana will moisturize and hydrate your tired skin, and the B vitamins will protect it against free radicals.  Additionally, bananas also contain vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin A, and zinc – all these are amazing for ageing skin.

Method:
  1. Mix the contents of a used tea bag with the quinoa flour.
  2. Add the mashed banana.
  3. Combine the ingredients together and apply the mask to a clean face.
  4. Leave the mask on for 15 minutes and use the mixture as a facial scrub before you wash it off.
This mask will instantly make your skin smoother and more radiant.

Do you have a favourite anti-ageing DIY recipe?

DIY: Coconut and lime body scrub

Hello everyone!

If you have been visiting Cosette's Beauty Pantry, you might be aware of my fascination with sugar scrubs.  I will link other sugar scrub recipes at the bottom of this post, if you like, you can check them out!

Some of my earlier recipes are not vegan and I cannot use them any longer.  So today, I want to share a vegan-friendly coconut and lime body scrub recipe.  The sweet scent of coconut combined with refreshing lime is reminiscent of a tropical island getaway.

To make this coconut and lime body scrub, you will need the following items.

Ingredients (to make one cup of scrub):
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil (melted)
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 tbsp shredded coconut
  • 6-8 drops of lime essential oil

Method:
  1. Melt coconut oil.
  2. Mix in with the sugar, until fully incorporated.
  3. Add the coconut and the lime essential oil.
  4. Mix together.

DIY: Vegan face mask for acne-prone skin

Hello everyone!

Like I always say; many store-bought beauty products are full of toxins and irritating ingredients.  Thankfully, nature provides effective alternatives for healthy skin that are gentle, cruelty free, vegan, and made with items you probably already have in your pantry!  Today I want to share one of my favourite beauty recipes with you; a vegan face mask for acne-prone skin!

You only need three ingredients, all of which I already used in previous DIY recipes I posted on this blog.

Ingredients:
  • 1 banana (ripe)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric

This face mask recipe with banana, baking soda and turmeric can reduce acne.

Here's how it works:

Bananas not only act as an astringent which balances oils in the skin, but also nourishes and rejuvenates the skin.  Baking soda pulls out oil and dirt from the pores and turmeric reduces inflammation and provides the skin with anti-microbial and anti-bacterial benefits.

Method:
  1. Mash the banana in a bowl.
  2. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well.
  3. Wash face and pat dry.
  4. Apply paste onto damp skin and leave for 10-15 minutes.
  5. Rinse off with cool water.

Try this out and let me know if it works for you too!

The hidden toxins in your bathroom cabinet

Hello everyone!

Is your bathroom cabinet stuffed with toxins?  Is your make-up or toiletry bag a blend of chemicals that could harm you?  YES is probably the answer to both questions.  The skin is the body’s largest organ and up to 60% of some of the chemicals we put on it may be absorbed into our bloodstream.

It is actually worse to put toxins on your skin then it is to eat them.  Your liver contains detoxifying enzymes which break down toxic elements. What you apply to your skin can go directly into your bloodstream.

Check out the infographic below to find out which dangerous ingredients you should try to avoid and why.

Always check  the ingredients list on your bottles and jars: the higher up the list these dangerous ingredients come, the greater the concentration.  Read the labels and the ingredients list very carefully before purchasing!

My experience with GlassesShop.com

Hello everyone!

I was recently offered the opportunity to choose a pair of eyeglasses from GlassesShop.com to try out and review.  I’ve always wondered how ordering glasses online would compare to the ones offered at the ophthalmologist’s office, so I jumped at the opportunity.

GlassesShop.com offers prescription glasses and prescription sunglasses for much cheaper prices than those offered at the ophthalmologist’s.  As far as selection, GlassesShop.com can’t be beaten.  They offer a wide selection of styles and colours.  If you do not need prescription glasses and want to wear glasses as a fashion accessoryyou can also buy many pairs without prescription lenses.  The site also offers a tool that allows you to virtually try on glasses by uploading your photo.  It’s a great option for someone unsure of what shape would look best on them.

I chose the GrandPrairie Wayfarer in pink/purple.  The colour and design are beautiful and the frame is really high quality and sturdy.

I love these glasses and I highly recommend GlassesShop.com to anyone who is on the market for a new pair of glasses.  Now, here is a special coupon code for you: GSHOT50 When using this code you can have 50% off on eyeglasses and sunglasses with free lenses (sale frames excluded).

Have you tried GlassesShop.com before?  Let me know about your experience in the comments section below.

DIY: Natural deodorant (spray)

Hello everyone!
If, like me, you hate the chemical-laden, store-bought deodorants,  you can make your own natural deodorant from scratch – in both solid and spray form.  Since I’ve already posted a DIY solid deodorant recipe, I want to share my favourite spray deodorant formula, too.  This one is way easier and quicker to make.  Enjoy!

Ingredients:
  • 60 ml (2 fl oz) witch hazel (astringent)
  • 12 drops of essential oil - Choose an oil with antibacterial and anti-fungal properties such as, sweet orange, tea tree, lemongrass, lavender, etc.

Method:
  1. Pour your ingredients into a spray bottle and screw the top back on.
  2. Shake well before use.
It's super simple to make and it really does work!

Have you ever tried using a DIY deodorant?  Do you prefer a solid or a spray formula?

Have a great day!

DIY: Vegan solid perfume

Hello everyone!

A few years ago I posted a DIY recipe for solid perfume.  In that recipe I used beeswax (back then I was not a vegan), so today I decided to give you a vegan alternative.

Ingredients:
  • 2 tsp candelilla wax or soy wax
  • 2 tsp sweet almond oil
  • 40-50 drops of your favourite essential oil(s)
Note - floral scents are uplifting and romantic, vanilla is warm and sweet, and wood scents can be grounding and calming.

Method:
  1. Melt wax and carrier oil in microwave.  Or if you want to double boil, follow the method in this post:  DIY: Solid perfume
  2. Add essential oil(s).
  3. While your perfume mix is still liquid, pour it into the tins.
  4. Wait until the mix cools and hardens, before moving the tins or closing the lids.
Solid perfumes are easy to package, carry, and re-apply; also handmade perfumes make wonderful gifts.

DIY: Skin lightening serum

Hello everyone!
As many of you may already know, I struggled with acne for years.  I have spent a lot of time looking for ways to clear up my acne.  What eventually helped me clear my skin was a clean, vegan diet and using natural, homemade skincare products.  However, I'm still dealing with acne scars on my face.
Before I became vegan, I used honey and yogurt (like my DIY: Greek yoghurt, oatmeal and honey facial mask and my DIY: Micro-dermabrasion pasteto help fade acne scars and both ingredients work really well, but now I'm only using plant-based ingredients.
Today I want to share the all-natural, vegan facial serum I'm currently using.  If you have any form of hyperpigmentation on your skin, you are going to love this DIY!
Ingredients:
  • 1 tbs sweet almond oil
  • 2 drops of lemon essential oil
  • 4 drops of sandalwood essential oil

Sweet almond oil is a wonderful carrier oil and it’s been used for ages to lighten and brighten skin.

Lemon essential oil is well-known for its skin-brightening effects.  Lemon juice is also very effective.

Sandalwood essential oil is a skin lightening, skin brightening oil.  It has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.  It is also high in antioxidants that can help reduce damage caused by free radicals, which promote ageing.

Method:
  1. Combine ingredients in a glass bottle (preferably with a dropper).
  2. Gently turn the bottle to allow the oils to mix well.
  3. Use 3-4 drops on damp, clean skin before bedtime.
  4. Optional - Moisturise as usual.
  5. Use every day for best results.

Notes:
  • Lemon essential oil  increases photosensitivity - you need to protect your skin from the sun while using this serum!
  • This serum will not get rid of indentations or protrusions left behind by acne.  It will only fade the flat red or brown dots left behind by pimples aka post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Have a great day!

February 2017 favourites

Hello everyone!

I haven't written a favourites post in a while, almost 6 months to be exact, oops!  This was my last favourites post: End of summer favourites, back in September 2016.  But I have been trying out and loving some new things recently so today I want to share my current beauty essentials.  I'm absolutely obsessed with the four beauty products I mention below,  these are all great products that also happen to be very affordable!  Check them out...

Denman Scalp Massage Brush

I use this brush in the shower to massage my scalp with the soft plastic pins while shampooing and to detangle my hair while conditioning.  I also use it to distribute my leave-in products evenly.  I even use this scalp massager when I colour my hair to make sure I remove any hair dye from my scalp.

Cien All-In-One BB Cream  (light)

This product aims to correct imperfections, even out skin tone, soften the skin, reduce wrinkles and provide 24h hydration.  I have to say I'm very impressed with this BB cream, it matches my skin tone, blends really easily and evens out my complexion.  My skin looks hydrated and healthier after application.

Silicone Face Cleansing Brush

This silicone brush is the best face cleansing brush I tried thus far.  It is extremely soft and flexible, making it very gentle on the skin.  If you’re new to cleansing tools and want to give one a try, this silicone pad is the easiest to use and the most budget-friendly.  The tiny bristles massage the debris out of the pores, while the larger bumps exfoliate and soften the skin.  I use the larger bumps to exfoliate my nose and chin.  Right now it's on sale at only $1.99 - Silicone Facial Cleaning Brush with Box.  I got one for my mum and she love it as well

Tinkle Eyebrow Razors

These razors are meant to sculpt eyebrows and remove peach fuzz and that's precisely why I use them.  Since I started growing back my eyebrows, a few years ago, I stopped tweezing altogether and only shape them using these eyebrow razors: Tinkle Eyebrow Razors.  It's a very quick and simple way to shape your brows.
